The Overstory, Richard Powers

A hand-transcription in micro-script of Richard Power’s The Overstory. The text side is made of strips of recycled drawings, prints, and papers from the artist’s studio painted over with Dr. Ph. Martin’s Bombay ink, then ripped into pieces, and glued onto a gampi and silk substrate. The scroll dimensions are the actual size of a 20” wide by 160’ long vertical section of a Sequoia sempervirens.

The non-transcribed side is collaged with 99 bookplates. Each bookplate is frottaged from a piece of recycled plywood carved with the image of the leaf/needles identified with each of the nine characters in the book surrounding a central image of the needles and cones of the Sequoia sempervirens. The author’s name and the book title are carved on the edges.
